Today, September 28, marks 30 years since the death of Dr. Najibullah, former President of Afghanistan, in Kabul city.
After the fall of his government in 1992, Dr. Najibullah took refuge in the United Nations office in Kabul and remained there for nearly four years.
On September 28, 1996, coinciding with the Taliban’s entry into Kabul, gunmen entered the UN compound and took Najibullah and his brother Shahpur Ahmadzai with them.
Hours later, the bodies of both were hanged by Taliban fighters at Ariana Square.
The United Nations condemned Najibullah’s death and the violation of the immunity of its compound.
Dr. Najibullah’s death is considered one of the most important and controversial events in Afghanistan’s contemporary history.
Najibullah came to the presidency of Afghanistan in 1986 and remained in power until 1992, even after the withdrawal of Soviet forces.
