The Wall Street Journal, citing American officials, has reported that Donald Trump, the President of the United States, has not accepted Iran’s proposal for a seven-day ceasefire.
The newspaper wrote on Saturday, September 26, that based on Trump’s current position, it is possible that conflicts may resume toward renewed American military attacks against Iranian positions after a pause.
According to the Wall Street Journal, Tehran’s proposal included reopening the Strait of Hormuz and resuming nuclear talks with America in exchange for ending the siege of Iran’s ports.
The newspaper added that the siege of Iran’s ports has exerted significant pressure on the country’s economy.
The Wall Street Journal also reported that Trump has told his aides that he expects attacks against positions of the Iranian government to resume after the US midterm elections in November.
In his public remarks, Trump has also said that Iran is under pressure to reach an agreement after the midterm elections — an agreement that would limit or dismantle the Islamic Republic’s nuclear program.
However, according to the newspaper, he has expressed doubt about Tehran accepting America’s demands.
This report was published after Seyed Abbas Araghchi, Iran’s Foreign Minister, announced that Tehran has presented a specific plan for reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
He said that if this plan is accepted, its implementation will begin immediately and the strait will be reopened on the sixth day.
