The White House has banned reporters from three American media outlets from accessing the premises of the institution — an action carried out following a prior announcement by Donald Trump, the President of the United States.

Reuters news agency has reported that CNN, MSNBC, and Politico separately announced that on Saturday morning, September 19, when their reporters went to the White House, their entry passes were confiscated.

The three media outlets have said they may challenge this ban legally due to its contradiction with the First Amendment of the US Constitution, which protects freedom of speech and the press.

CNN, in a statement, called this action an “unlawful attack” on the network’s legal right to carry out journalistic activities without government interference.

MSNBC and Politico have also said they will defend their rights under the First Amendment of the Constitution.

MSNBC has added that it will take all necessary measures to defend its legal rights and the role of independent journalism in democracy.

On Friday, Trump accused these media outlets on social media of publishing “fake news” and said that they should not, when covering the activities of the US President, publish material that he described as “lies and fabrications.”

He had also said that other media outlets might face similar action.

On Friday, Trump also named The New York Times and The Washington Post as examples of “fake” media, but did not specifically say he would ban these two outlets from accessing the White House.

The New York Times, in a statement, called Trump’s recent action a retaliatory threat and contrary to the Constitution, and The Washington Post also considered its access to the White House a legal right.

Trump has previously also restricted access of some media outlets and reporters to White House press events.
