The United Nations Security Council is holding a meeting to review the latest developments in Afghanistan — a meeting that will examine the human rights situation, restrictions on women, terrorist threats, and security tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan.
The meeting will be held on Wednesday, September 16 (25 Sunbula), and Roza Otunbayeva, head of UNAMA, will present a report on Afghanistan’s latest situation to Security Council members.
Before the public session, Security Council members will also consult behind closed doors on the Afghanistan situation.
Reviewing the situation of women and human rights has been named as one of the main axes of this meeting.
Restrictions on education and employment for women and girls are expected to be raised at the meeting.
Afghanistan’s political process and how the international community should engage with the Taliban will be among other topics of discussion.
While some Security Council members emphasize pressure to respect human rights, China and Russia want continued engagement and economic aid without human rights preconditions.
The meeting is scheduled to be held at 6:30 PM Kabul time.
