The foreign ministers of the Group of Seven (G7) have called on Iran to end its arming and support of the Houthis in Yemen.
According to a Reuters report, the foreign ministers of Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the United States said on Monday, the 21st of September, in a statement after a meeting on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly that Iran’s continued arming and support of the Houthis is a dangerous pattern of escalation that could undermine international trade and create global instability.
The statement said: “We condemn in the strongest terms the Houthis’ continued and unacceptable attacks in Yemen and against Saudi Arabia.”
The G7 foreign ministers have called on the Houthis to immediately stop all military actions, threats, and attacks against civilian shipping and to return to the political process in good faith.
In recent years, the Houthis in Yemen have repeatedly attacked commercial ships in the Red Sea, and these actions have raised concerns about the security of shipping and international trade.
The G7’s call on Iran to stop supporting and arming the Houthis comes as, in its recent statement, it described the group’s continued attacks as a cause of escalation and instability.
