Pope Leo, the leader of the world’s Catholics, took concerns raised about the dangers of artificial intelligence for humanity seriously and said these warnings are not “fake news.”

He said on Monday, September 28, at a press conference upon returning from France to Rome that the concerns of AI experts and specialists must be taken seriously, and the world should not ignore the possibility of dangerous consequences of this technology.

Pope Leo also criticized tech company executives who oppose government restrictions and regulations on artificial intelligence.

Referring to the view of Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia, on AI regulation, he said a balance must be created between innovation and oversight.

Pope Leo called on countries and experts to increase dialogue, study, and research on artificial intelligence and to find ways to prevent this technology from reaching a stage where it could pose a serious threat to humanity.

These remarks come after Donald Trump, the President of the United States, called concerns about the dangers of artificial intelligence baseless, and Trump is scheduled to meet today with a number of executives of major technology companies about artificial intelligence.
