On the occasion of World Gorilla Day, the United Nations says gorillas (apes) play an important role in maintaining the health of ecosystems.

The organization said in a statement on Thursday, September 24, that gorillas, by eating fruits and dispersing their seeds, help restore and expand forests, and therefore play an important role in nature.

The UN added that gorillas face threats such as habitat destruction, deforestation, illegal hunting, and disease, and protecting them is important for preserving biodiversity.

According to UN information, World Gorilla Day is held every year on September 24, and its goal is to raise awareness about the protection of these animals and their natural habitats.

This day was named in 2017, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Karisoke Research Center in Rwanda.
