The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) says the use of greenhouses equipped with drip irrigation systems can reduce water consumption in the agricultural sector by up to 60%.
FAO has announced that, with financial support from the European Union and cooperation from the United Nations Development Programme, greenhouses equipped with drip irrigation have been built for a number of farmers in Kandahar.
According to this institution, these greenhouses provide the ground for effective use of limited water resources, cultivation of off-season crops, and supply of vegetables for families and the market.
FAO added that one of these greenhouses has an area of about 400 square meters and is shared among six farmers. Seeds, fertilizer, tools, and technical training have also been provided for the farmers.
This program is part of the “Afghanistan Community Resilience” project, which is being implemented with the support of the European Union and the cooperation of FAO, the UN Development Programme, the International Organization for Migration, and the UN Office on Drugs and Crime in Kandahar, Helmand, and Badghis.
