I remember my first day of menstruation like the moonlight of a full moon night. I was surprised to see blood on my underwear, because I had grown up in a house with four older sisters, yet no one had ever spoken to me about menstruation. I had no preparation for it. I had only heard a few scattered things from our school teacher who had spoken about it vaguely; but her words, though unclear and confusing, were etched in my mind.

One day at school, our teacher spoke about menstruation. Although I do not remember exactly, she said: “In ancient times, when a woman among the Jews was menstruating, they would not live in the same house with her, they would not sit or associate with her in the same gathering, they would not eat the leftover water and food of that woman — they would even expel her from the house and the gathering. But in Islam, these matters are treated very normally, and menstruation is considered a natural process in women’s bodies.”

Menstruation should not be a taboo, because God Almighty has explicitly and clearly mentioned the word (Hayd) in the Holy Quran. So why, in our society where the Holy Quran is our sacred book and we follow it, should we be ashamed to say the name of menstruation?

Menstruation is a natural issue, and we should not consider it a taboo or a disgrace.

It was the fifteenth of Ramadan when I started menstruating. My face had turned white like chalk, and my whole body ached. I felt as if my body had been placed in cold water, and this state was very painful and terrifying for me. I also felt lethargy, dizziness, and fear, and I thought maybe something serious had happened to me.

Even though I had some information, I still felt shame, loneliness, and isolation. I could not tell anyone, not even my sisters, because in our house menstruation does not mean a girl’s maturity; rather, it is accompanied by shame, silence, secrecy, and endurance.

In our house, no one talks about this topic, not even my mother; even though she is a woman and easily talks about matters related to my brothers, she stays silent about topics like menstruation. I said to myself: is it possible that talking about women’s issues is shameful, but about men’s is not?

I spent the first few days with physical pain and psychological pressure with great difficulty. Even to keep anyone from noticing, I would falsely perform ablution (wudu) and pray. After every trip to the toilet, I would spray perfume on all my clothes so that no one would notice. I even fasted, because I had never seen my sisters break their fast in Ramadan. It is true that I understood one should not fast or pray, but since I had never seen any of my sisters do otherwise, I thought that during menstruation one must also not eat and must endure.

At that time, I was small and understood nothing about hygiene and sanitary products, because no one had explained it to me. On the first day, I cut one of my clothes with scissors away from my mother’s and sisters’ sight; in the second month, I cut another piece of clothing. In short, for a whole year, I cut up anything I thought was useless.

My story is, in fact, a reflection of the bitter realities of our society — a society where girls still reach maturity in secret, where girls spend their puberty without family support and without full awareness of hygiene. Even now, in our culture, menstruation is a forbidden topic; a topic that girls must understand in secret, but must not talk about. If a girl speaks about menstruation and the psychological and physical pressure she faces during her menstrual days in a gathering — especially if men are present — certainly all the women in that gathering would be shocked and would immediately label her as shameless.

Today, I shared my experience with you without a veil and without shame, in the hope that I may have broken a silence — a silence that has been considered a taboo for years. Even now, in our home and among our relatives, talking about menstruation is considered shamelessness; none of our men talk about it. I have spoken many times, directly and indirectly, about menstruation, its hardships, and the psychological and physical pressure of menstruation in gatherings and among my family members, and each time I have faced the cold reaction of my mother and sisters, which is unbearable for me. Is it possible to be ashamed of oneself? Ashamed of the existence and natural growth of the body?

And in the end, I want to say that I hope a day will come when menstruation is no longer a taboo in our customs and culture, and we can openly talk about it with family members and not remain silent — we can speak about hygiene with great ease and without any shame, and consult a doctor during pain and psychological pressure.

I was thirteen years old; I said goodbye to my childhood world.
