The Taliban had previously covered the statue&#8217;s face with plaster, but two days ago they removed it entirely \u2014 an act that has triggered a wave of reactions inside and outside the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ds-markdown-paragraph\"><span class=\"\">Marshal Abdul Rashid Dostum, leader and founder of the National Islamic Movement of Afghanistan, in reaction to this event, called the destruction of the Amir Ali-Shir Nava&#8217;i statue &#8220;intolerable and unforgivable.&#8221; He described the act as a blatant insult to the country&#8217;s national figures and emphasized that the historical and cultural monuments of Mazar-i-Sharif are deeply tied to the name and legacy of this prominent figure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ds-markdown-paragraph\"><span class=\"\">Dostum added that disrespecting the statue of Amir Ali-Shir Nava&#8217;i has wounded the feelings of millions of Turkic people in Afghanistan and the region. In his message, he called on the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to act to protect Afghanistan&#8217;s cultural heritage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ds-markdown-paragraph\"><span class=\"\">The leader of the National Islamic Movement of Afghanistan also emphasized that such symbolic acts are part of a worrying process of de-identification and cultural erasure in the country. He warned that continuing this process will have serious consequences for Afghanistan&#8217;s social and cultural cohesion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ds-markdown-paragraph\"><span class=\"\">Alongside Dostum, Enayatullah Babur Farahmand, former deputy of the High Council for National Reconciliation, in a statement called the destruction of the Amir Ali-Shir Nava&#8217;i statue &#8220;a heinous act against Afghanistan&#8217;s history and identity.&#8221; He described the move as a clear sign of the Taliban&#8217;s identity erasure and cultural vandalism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ds-markdown-paragraph\"><span class=\"\">Babur Farahmand added that this act shows the Taliban have no will to respect the shared culture and history of the people. He emphasized that silence against such acts means accepting the process of erasing national identity and values.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ds-markdown-paragraph\"><span class=\"\">Turkic civil and social associations of Afghanistan also issued a statement, calling the destruction of the Amir Ali-Shir Nava&#8217;i statue &#8220;a blatant attack on the collective memory of the people and part of the shared identity of citizens.&#8221; They emphasized that this act is not only an insult to the Turkic people of Afghanistan but also disrespect to all citizens.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ds-markdown-paragraph\"><span class=\"\">These associations added that &#8220;such acts are a continuation of a worrying process that has been going on against the Turkic people of Afghanistan for years and has reached its peak during the current Taliban period.&#8221; They emphasized that civil society will not remain silent against this process.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ds-markdown-paragraph\"><span class=\"\">According to these institutions, the destruction of the Amir Ali-Shir Nava&#8217;i statue is a symbol of the cultural and historical removal of an ethnic group from the country&#8217;s collective memory. They warned that ignoring this issue could pave the way for new social crises.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ds-markdown-paragraph\"><span class=\"\">These associations called on the international community, especially UNESCO, not to remain indifferent to such acts and to take practical action to protect Afghanistan&#8217;s cultural heritage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ds-markdown-paragraph\"><span class=\"\">At the regional level, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan also reacted to the event. The ministry said in a statement that after the destruction of the Amir Ali-Shir Nava&#8217;i statue, it immediately contacted Taliban officials and requested an official explanation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ds-markdown-paragraph\"><span class=\"\">Akhror Burkhanov, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan, said the Taliban expressed regret in response and promised to build a new monument for Amir Ali-Shir Nava&#8217;i and name one of the intersections of Mazar-i-Sharif after him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ds-markdown-paragraph\"><span class=\"\">It is worth noting that Amir Ali-Shir Nava&#8217;i, known as &#8220;Amir al-Kalam,&#8221; was one of the greatest poets, politicians, and thinkers of the 9th Hijri century, who played an important role in promoting Turkic and Persian language and literature.
