Sources at Noor Hospital in Kabul say the Taliban have suspended cataract surgeries at the hospital for about two weeks, a decision that has disrupted patients’ access to one of the essential medical services.

A resident of Baghlan province who had traveled to Kabul for eye treatment told Taneen on Sunday, 2 November, that he had visited Noor Hospital for treatment and was informed by hospital officials that cataract surgeries would not be performed until further notice.

The resident of Baghlan added that large numbers of patients visit the hospital daily for eye-related problems and cataract surgeries. However, they are turned away and return home without receiving medical services.

According to sources, services in this department have been suspended for two weeks, with the decision reportedly based on objections to this type of surgery on religious grounds. However, the Taliban have not yet issued an official explanation regarding the matter.

Sources said the suspension has placed some patients in need of treatment in a difficult situation, particularly those who cannot access other medical facilities or afford treatment at private centers.

Sources emphasized that the order to suspend cataract surgeries remains in effect until further notice, and no specific date has been announced for the resumption of these services.

Noor Hospital is one of Kabul’s well-known eye care centers, and the suspension of these services could further restrict access to treatment for a large number of patients.
