The reduction of foreign aid has pushed organizations led by women and women’s rights defenders in Afghanistan into a financial crisis; a report from the Women’s Section of the United Nations shows that out of every five organizations surveyed, about four face the risk of closure.<\/span><\/p>\n

This report was prepared on Tuesday, September 29, based on the views of 74 women’s organizations in April 2026.<\/span><\/p>\n

The report shows that the reduction of financial resources since 2025 has not only affected the budgets of these organizations, but has also reduced the scope of services, the number of staff, and women’s and girls’ access to needed support.<\/span><\/p>\n

The UN findings show that 72 percent of the surveyed organizations faced budget reductions in 2025. In 2026, the financial situation for 66 percent of them has been described as “worse” or “critical.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Out of 74 organizations, one has completely ceased its activities, and 40 others have said they may suspend or completely stop their activities in the next 12 months.<\/span><\/p>\n

At the same time, the need of women and girls for services has increased. 83 percent of organizations have said these needs have increased compared to previous years, but 77 percent of them have emphasized that their capacity to respond is lower than the existing level of need.<\/span><\/p>\n

As a result, 62 percent of organizations now cover fewer women and girls than before January 2025, and 54 percent, due to lack of capacity, have placed some applicants on waiting lists or refused to accept them.<\/span><\/p>\n

The reduction of financial resources has also affected support services. According to the report, 76 percent of organizations have reported a significant reduction or suspension of services related to the management and referral of cases of violence against women.<\/span><\/p>\n

Likewise, services for creating safe environments for women and girls have been reduced or suspended in 70 percent of organizations, and livelihood and economic empowerment programs have also faced reduction or disruption in 68 percent of the surveyed organizations.<\/span><\/p>\n

The consequences of budget reductions have also reached the employees of these organizations. 92 percent of participating organizations have said they have lost some of their employees. In 18 organizations, at least 60 percent of the workforce has been reduced, and 9 organizations have reported losing more than 90 percent of their staff.<\/span><\/p>\n

To keep activities alive, 65 percent of organizations have used unpaid or volunteer staff, and 54 percent have reduced staff salaries to less than the amount stated in their contracts.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Women’s Section of the United Nations has emphasized that women’s organizations in Afghanistan need flexible and multi-year financial support to continue their activities.<\/span><\/p>\n

These organizations have also called for financial aid to be given directly to women’s organizations so they can continue their services despite existing restrictions.<\/span><\/p>\n

After the Taliban’s return to power in August 2021, extensive restrictions have been imposed on the social, educational, and working lives of women and girls in Afghanistan.<\/span><\/p>\n

The ban on education for girls above the sixth grade, restrictions on women’s work and employment, and the reduction of their presence in various sectors of society are among the issues that international organizations and human rights bodies have repeatedly expressed concern about.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
