Hamid Karzai, former President of Afghanistan, has strongly condemned the Houthis’ attempt to attack Mecca and emphasized the need to preserve the sanctity of the Haramain Sharifain (the Two Holy Mosques).
In a message posted on X on Wednesday, September 16 (25 Sunbula), Karzai expressed sympathy with Saudi Arabia and expressed hope that, with the wisdom and foresight of the involved countries, further escalation and conflict would be prevented and the ground prepared for lasting peace and stability in the region.
This reaction comes after Saudi Arabia announced that its air defense intercepted and destroyed a drone attributed to the Houthis south of Mecca, before it entered the city’s prohibited airspace.
The Houthis have denied targeting Mecca.
Shehbaz Sharif, Prime Minister of Pakistan, also strongly condemned the drone attack near Mecca and said the people of Pakistan are “saddened and concerned” by the incident.
