Ismail Khan, a former jihad commander, on the occasion of the anniversary of the death of Burhanuddin Rabbani, former head of Afghanistan’s High Peace Council, recalled his efforts to end the war through dialogue and national reconciliation.
On Sunday, September 20, he said in a message that Rabbani, during his tenure as head of the High Peace Council, made extensive efforts to resolve Afghanistan’s crisis through negotiation and sought to pave the way for dialogue with the Taliban.
In this message, Ismail Khan described the Taliban’s reaction to Rabbani’s peace efforts as bombings and suicide attacks, and said that Rabbani lost his life during what he called a “complicated conspiracy.”
He also emphasized Burhanuddin Rabbani’s political and jihadist role in Afghanistan’s contemporary developments and considered him one of the influential figures of Afghanistan’s Islamic movement.
According to Ismail Khan, Rabbani played an important role during the war against the Soviets, the mujahideen government, and also the first resistance against the Taliban.
Burhanuddin Rabbani was killed on 29 Sunbula 1390 (solar calendar) following a suicide attack at his home in Kabul.
The attacker had introduced himself as a Taliban representative for peace talks and had hidden explosives in his turban.
