Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, will speak next week at a public session of the United Nations Security Council on artificial intelligence and international security.
The OpenAI spokesperson told Reuters on Friday, September 18, that Altman will attend the 15-member Security Council meeting in person.
The session is scheduled to be held on Wednesday, coinciding with the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
According to the OpenAI spokesperson, Altman is expected to speak about the need for international coordination, the establishment of common safety standards, and the measures the company is taking to enable people around the world to benefit from artificial intelligence.
This session is being held at the initiative of France, which holds the Security Council presidency for September, and Jean-Noël Barrot, France’s Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, will chair it.
In a note about the session, France emphasized the need for action toward the safe and responsible development of artificial intelligence, saying that the risk of misuse of this technology and the possibility of losing control over advanced AI models could affect international peace and security.
The United Nations Security Council, which is responsible for maintaining international peace and security, held its first session on the dangers of artificial intelligence in 2023.
Altman had also warned about the potential dangers of advanced artificial intelligence before the current expansion of AI technology.
