Donald Trump, the President of the United States, is set to meet with the prime ministers of Denmark and Greenland in New York and sign an agreement that will pave the way for an increased American military presence in Greenland and could end tensions over the island.
Reuters reported on Tuesday, the 22nd of September, that this agreement will allow the US to expand its military presence in Greenland, and it is expected that, alongside the “Pituffik” Space Base, two new military facilities will be established in “Narsarsuaq” and “Mestersvig.”
Greenland, which was formerly a colony and is now an autonomous region within the Kingdom of Denmark, is located between the Arctic and North America and possesses extensive energy and mineral resources.
This agreement was formed after Trump in January refused to rule out the option of using military or economic pressure to acquire Greenland — an action that led to a diplomatic crisis within NATO and forced Denmark and Greenland’s government into intensive negotiations.
Denmark’s Foreign Minister has said that this agreement places Arctic security under NATO’s collective oversight, rather than leaving it solely to Washington and Copenhagen.
The text of the agreement has not yet been published before the signing ceremony, and it is unclear whether this agreement modifies the 1951 defense treaty between the US and Denmark or will create a new framework for the American presence in Greenland.
Reuters has reported that this agreement is considered a retreat from Trump’s previous attempt to fully acquire Greenland, but at the same time demonstrates a significant expansion of American military infrastructure on the island.
